Description : Dworshak National Fish Hatchery, located at the confluence of the mainstem Clearwater River and the North Fork of the Clearwater river, is considered one of the world's largest steelhead trout and spring Chinook salmon rearing facilities. The hatchery was built in 1969 to mitigate for the loss of the Clearwater River 'B' run steelhead trout as a result of the construction of Dworshak Dam. Additional construction was completed in 1982 under the Lower Snake River Compensation Program (LSRCP). The purpose of the hatchery is to mitigate for loss of summer steelhead and resident trout habitat after the construction of Dworshak Dam on the North Fork of the Clearwater River. Spring Chinook production is to mitigate for dams constructed on the lower Snake River.
