Since the 1990s, Columbia River Basin cutthroat trout subspecies (i.e., coastal, westslope, and Yellowstone) have been petitioned for federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. Despite not receiving federal protection, these subspecies continue to be a species of interest and concern as the amount of population-specific information remains limited. Range-wide abundance and trend estimates are not available; however, estimates are available for some management units. Despite the availability of information for select management units, population size and trend values are unknown for a significant number of units.
