For the Lower Monumental Reservoir white sturgeon population, status data are limited
to that which was collected in 1997. An assessment was completed in 2012 and that
information will be available in 2013. Results from the 1997 survey indicated that
the population density, growth, and fitness for the Lower Monumental population
were lower than those for the subpopulations in the lower Columbia River reservoirs
(i.e., Bonneville Reservoir, The Dalles, and John Day). Managers estimated that
2,230 white sturgeon were present in Lower Monumental Reservoir in 1996. The existing
population consisted of few young fish leading managers to suggest that the population
was recruitment-limited.
