The Hells Canyon Dam to Oxbow Dam reach is mostly reservoir habitat with a limited
area of free-flowing habitat. Impoundment has resulted in limiting spawning area
and is likely contributing to the export of white sturgeon larval through Hells Canyon
Dam. Past surveys have resulted in the collection of few fish. The low number of
juvenile and adult white sturgeon suggests that reproduction and recruitment have
been limited since impoundment. Despite catch-and-release regulations, no significant
increase of abundance has occurred over the last 30 years. At this time, managers
do not believe the reservoir is capable of supporting a self-sustaining white sturgeon
population.
